Have you ever tasted a PNV wine?
PNV stands for Premiere Napa Valley, an event where the top Napa Valley wineries put a limited amount of wine from their best barrel, or produce a unique blend to offer it up for auction to benefit the Napa Valley Vintners. Restaurants and retailers are invited to participate and bid on the lots that can range from 5-20 cases. When the wine is released the winning bidder receives the bottles specially labeled, numbered, and signed by the winemaker. The best kept secret is that bottles from previous years’ events may still be available for sale.
For this year’s PNV Auction, which took place in February, Taplin Cellars blended lots harvested in 2021 from two places with very different microclimates within the estate. They blend beautifully to deliver deep complexity. The finished product was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that had aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The wine is an expression of the extraordinary soil variation that exists in the Napa Valley, even within the same estate.
We are proud to say that our lot went for $16,000 to the lucky winner (making the wine worth roughly $266/bottle!). We can’t wait to hear what the lucky wine lovers who end up with it in their cellar think of it when they start popping bottles in a few years.
